Thanksgiving

I trust that you all had a wonderful time celebrating Thanksgiving with your families.  I hope that your little one had a chance to share Psalm 100 at your family gathering.  We shared it when we celebrated at school with our kindergarten and second grade friends. Thank you to the parents who cooked, served, set up or sent in supplies.  We had a wonderful celebration and I thought you'd like to have a peek!

Book-It Day!

Look at all of these book characters!  Our room looks as though our books have come to life!

Elephant and Piggie books make us laugh.

We shared our books with our  friends.

Do you like green eggs and ham?

We had a great day sharing our books and costumes.

Apples, Apples, Apples

We have had fun with apples this week.  They were featured in our science lessons as we read books about how they grow and how the trees change through the seasons. In Bible class we used an apple to understand the concept of the Trinity.  We learned new words like pip and lenticel.  We used apples in Math to learn to divide a solid.  We use the seeds to learn to write number sentences.  We used our apples to learn about graphing. We even made applesauce!

"Look how many seeds were in my apple!"

After counting our seeds we enjoyed eating the apples.

There is a lot to learn about apples.

Learning to read a graph is fun if you can graph your apple.

We saved our apples to make friendship applesauce!  Everyone brought and apple, peeled and added it to the crock pot to cook into applesauce.

Peeling our apples using the  "apple peeler, corer, slicer" was great fun.

Look at those long pieces of apple peel!

These girls were having a good time eating them!

Our room smelled so good as the apples cooked.  We all enjoyed an applesauce snack in the afternoon.

A few of the comments I overheard as the children enjoyed the applesauce:

"Yummy",  "This is the best applesauce I ever ate", "Wait 'til I tell my mom about this!", "Did we really make this - all we did was peel the apple and cook it?" "Is cinnamon the ONLY thing we added?" "Can I have some more?"
"This is delicious."  "Can we make some more on Monday?"

The 10th Day of School

Last Wednesday was the 10th day of school.  It started out like every other school day.  But as we were enjoying our Morning Review time with our kindergarten and second grade friends we had a surprise visitor!

Who appeared?  That hero of all super heroes, mathematical marvel, and the supreme saver of the place - Zero the Hero, flew in for a visit.  After a mini lesson on zero and place value and a treat for the class, he was off again.  We are all left wondering when he will return?  Until then "Zero saves the Place!"

Orientation

I was delighted to see so many of you at orientation.  I was especially happy to see parents meeting each other, children renewing friendships and meeting new classmates.  It was a busy night!  I hope that you received helpful information.  I am so excited for Wednesday to get here.  I am eager to get to know your children.  I know that your little one will glow this year!

P.S.  I hope you have started practicing your school bedtime!
